How They Work

Heat and cold are the two most common types of pain-relief therapies for muscle and joint pain. Which one you use depends on whether the pain is new (acute) or recurring (somewhat older / chronic).

Asweda Wheat Bags are an excellent natural alternative for relieving aches & pains. They are 100% cotton bags, filled with carefully selected, high quality wheat grain. They can be heated in the microwave or cooled in the freezer and are then applied to the body wherever healing or comfort is needed.

Asweda wheat bags use grains that have unique structural properties that allow them to heat quickly and then release the warmth slowly over a period of time. Heat therapy with Asweda wheat bags dilates the blood vessels inside the muscles and surrounding areas, increasing the blood supply and enhancing the flow of oxygen & other nutrients, and thus promotes healing.

Asweda wheat bags can be put in a plastic cover and cooled in the freezer for immediate use after a new injury to reduce inflammation and swelling and aid the healing.

Whether hot or cold, the movement of the grains naturally settles them against the contours of the body making them pliable and comfortable to use.

Asweda wheat bags are reusable and can be heated over and over again. They generally have a long life span. However, we urge you to carefully follow instructions provided with the pack to ensure longevity.

Heat Therapy

What does heat therapy do?

Heat opens up blood vessels, which increases blood flow and supplies oxygen and nutrients to reduce pain in joints and relax sore muscles, ligaments, and tendons. The warmth also decreases muscle spasms and can increase range of motion. Applying superficial heat to your body can improve the flexibility of tendons and ligaments, reduce muscle spasms, and alleviate pain.

When do you use it?

Apply heat if you have stiff joints, muscle tension & stiffness or chronic muscle and joint pain.

A few tips:

  • Don’t apply heat for longer than 20 minutes, unless your doctor or physical therapist recommends longer.
  • Don’t use heat if there’s swelling. Use cold first, and then heat.
  • People with diabetes(with peripheral neuropathy) and poor circulation states are advised to consult their physician before using heat therapy.
  • Don’t use heat on an open wound or stitches.
  • Don’t lie down on a heating pad; you could fall asleep and burn your skin

When do you use it?

Any cold treatment should be used for 24 to 48 hours after an injury. Cold therapy is good for sprains, strains, bumps, and bruises that may occur in sports or lifting. Apply cold packs to the injured areas for no more than 20 minutes at a time, removing the cold for 10 minutes and reapplying it again.

How can I use it safely?

Don’t apply it for longer than 20 minutes.

If in doubt as to whether to apply heat or cold to an injury, call your doctor

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Asweda wheat bag?

Asweda wheat bag is a 100% cotton bag, filled with non-chemically treated, specially procured, whole grain, ‘A’ grade wheat that can be used either as a hot pack (heated in a microwave) or as a cold pack (stored in the freezer) for external application. Asweda wheat bag is a natural, safe and effective alternative for treating and managing aches and pains.

How does Asweda wheat bag work?

The cellular structure of wheat used in Asweda provides fantastic temperature retention and can absorb and distribute both heat and cold evenly, gradually ensuring effective pain relief. Asweda wheat bag easily molds to the contour of the area that is being treated.

How should you use the Asweda wheat bag as a hot pack?

The Asweda wheat bag is heated in the microwave for a set amount of time. For maximum safety follow the recommended heating time mentioned in the instructions provided with the pack. Once the Asweda wheat bag is heated it is simply placed on the affected area.

Can Asweda wheat bags be used as cold packs?

Yes. Asweda wheat bags can be used as cold packs. Simply place it inside a plastic bag and keep it in the freezer. After about 4 hours the Asweda wheat bag is usually cool enough. Please note Asweda wheat bags are not ice packs so they never freeze. We recommend keeping one in the freezer on a regular basis.

How is the wheat treated?

Our wheat is non-chemically treated ensuring you receive the best natural quality product possible. We have developed a treatment system that ensures our wheat is free from mold (fungus) and natural predators. Our treatment process is our trade secret!

My Asweda wheat bag compress isn’t hot enough can I heat it longer?

Our heating times are only a guideline as microwaves vary as well as an individual’s tolerance and preference for heat. We recommend not exceeding the stated total heating time. Please note that older people and young children have a different tolerance to heat so the Asweda wheat bag does not necessarily need to be as hot as an adult may usually have it.

If 2 minutes is not hot enough increase the heating time in 15 second increments until it is hot enough but do not go above 3 minutes.

Heating above this time will make the Asweda wheat bag too hot and may cause damage. Asweda wheat bags emit heat slowly so we suggest checking the temperature by placing the Asweda wheat bag on your forearm / the back of your hand and leaving for 10-15 seconds. You will feel the heat gently increase and this is the safest way to determine if the wheat bag is warm enough.

Never heat for more than a total of 3 minutes!

My Asweda wheat bag compress smells – why?

I’ve over heated my Asweda wheat bag, what should I do?

See above. Some people innocently program the microwave for the wrong amount of time, walk away and do not realize until they come back.

How do I store my Asweda wheat bag?

Wheat is a food source, so predators like mice are going to try and find it. We suggest keeping your Asweda wheat bag in an airtight container or a sealed bag.

How long will my Asweda wheat bag last?

Many variables come into play. Generally speaking if you heat an Asweda wheat bag compress once a week it may last around 2 years or more. If you heat it several times a day, every day, you may only get 6 months use from the product. It completely depends on the manner of use.

Can I wash my Asweda wheat bag compress?

No. Because we use non-chemically treated food grade wheat if you overly wet the bag the grain will sprout. You can use a damp sponge to lightly clean the outside of the bag. If the Asweda wheat bag compress becomes a little damp then place into the microwave and heat for the recommended time.
